WATERSCAPE TRIANGLE
STAVANGER, NORWAY
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Waterscape Triangle in Norway is a sacred space that contains a water-viewing platform, a cafe, and a store. It is located underneath Valbergtaarnet, an existing fire watch tower at the center of the city with views around the town and harbors. For a long period of time, people have relied on shipping, shipbuilding, and fishing. The discovery of oil in 1960's further strengthens water as their main source of living. In Stavanger, water is sacred and worthy of celebration.
Phi, the Golden Ratio, defines the building geometry. Primary spaces are located in 1 (the square portion), and secondary spaces, including the cafe, the store, and restrooms, are located in 0.618. The sectional triangle that opens to the North Sea also follows the same proportion. On the viewing platform, one is transformed into a higher state of contemplation and understanding. One ponders about happiness and grief, past and present, life and death. At its core, the building is a vehicle that transports people of Stavanger to the endless possibilities of tomorrow.
